Why I Love Liverpool
Too long without any league title,
Mister This Year is Our Year, Utopians, Historian, and much more, terms that
commonly used by Indonesia football fans to troll Liverpool fans. And yes, we
have to suck all of it, because basically that is nothing but true. Far compare
to Arsenal number 4 myth as fine as united number 6 in last season. Even history
said, our beloved Gerrard really never lift up premier league title. Well,
history hit you back right in your face dude.
Even this is seemingly not a good
fact, and of course, if I can choose I will choose to surrender, like seasons
before (even I said I will change my mind to Leicester last season) but simply I
cannot. Because Liverpool, this legendary team already teach me a lot about
life, about struggle, and about faith. The most important thing is faith, last
word that describe what Liverpool gave to me.
I life far away from Merseyside,
far away from Anfield, even I can only dream about stand there supporting the
lads (but seriously, I still try to make my own path to Anfield spotlight, hope
can reach there someday). Indonesia, maybe as a Liverpool fans we were quite familiar
with this name, cause Garuda Indonesia Airlines was a sponsor for LFC in 15/16
season. A beautiful tropical country, that Gerrard and fellow Liverpool member
ever visit this country and face our national team with great 2-0 victory.
Indonesia is a massive football community,
even yet we still didn’t have amazing footballing culture like Europe and
passionate football like South America. And I don’t know but I believe LFC had
a strong fan base here. Well, I already had more than 5 friends that proudly
said he is a liverpudlian. Commanded by Big Reds Indonesia (yet I still didn’t
joining this because I am a colleague student with zero income) we still sang
You Will Never Walk Alone as loud as we can here, try to keep in touch with
club by following every official information sources, and even debate and defend
this club glory in every chances, especially when we have to face those united
boys.
But yes, maybe we still did
something small, because only few of us had ever put his leg in Anfield stand. But
Liverpool FC, LFC really gave us a lot of inspiration. Even the inspiration
about football itself! So, there was no doubt that LFC literary inspire Indonesian
to think and love football. And the question is, what about me? Why I become a Liverpool
fan (well, I don’t know I can consider myself as a fan, but, tonight 5-0 defeat
against City really hurt my heart) but yes, I love Liverpool FC and I will tell
you why.
From not-rich family, made my life
back there was unimaginable. Almost 2 years without electricity, and about
eleven (11) years without television, yes, that is true. My family didn’t had
television until I reach 11 years old. So, knowing information was very rare to
me, except knowing from newspaper or in Sunday when I visited my grandpa house.
And there is a one excellent day that literary change my life.
That was Tuesday or Thursday, I forgot
that, I had a chance to visit my grandpa house. You know, chance to watch
television. While I came there, my uncle still sulking around, and watching the
television. I do not what club he likes (cause really I do not know much about
football that time) but on the screen, I just laugh. Because the red side los
3-0 right before the end of first half. Well, I only know Shevcenko (because my
friend love him so much) so I support Shevcenko’s team that time, and by
looking at the red team face, well simply Shevcenko will bring back a cup back
to his home.
The, to open my knowledge, I ask my
uncle, what cup is it, and who was the red one, and Shevcenko’s team name.
“Champion League, red one is Liverpool,
white one (Shevcenko’s team) is AC milan”
Then I ask, where they played? Well
because that was an enormous stadium.
Thinking, I believe my uncle forgot
the name of this stadium, but he simply said “it is Istanbul, Turkey”. Well,
and that was 2005 and I believe you start figured out what kind of match it is.
Even if this is not a live show, but this match just happened 2 or 3 night
before, so in that time it is still consider as a live match, and I believe my
uncle supported Liverpool.
Then the match started again, I don’t
know but I saw in Steven Gerrard and whole lads faces, there was no fear. Well,
simply with my child prodigy I only said “you already lose 3-0, why don’t you
give up?” and yes, I was wrong.
Impressive heading from Steven
Gerrard really knock my heart down, and his expression after that? Swinging up
his hands, up and down, asking for more support. Than responded by the
supporters with You Will Never Walk Alone, again and again, really chill my
back.
“Walk on, Walk on, With Hope in
Your Heart, and you will never walk alone, you will never walk alone”
Really, even I am not there, not in
Istanbul, that creepy sound system still deliver a nice sound about this song. And
this song is not stopping! Hell! Even though the score still 3-1. Then in some
chaotic event in front of AC Milan goal, a brilliant shoot was taken, and goal!
Simply like that, and second goal for LFC. Of course, that kind of ambiance
still happened and getting stronger. Looks like Kopites will not let their lads
down easily.
And finally, in and critical event,
AC Milan defender made a mistake that result a great chance, penalty. Xabi, the
executioner irritate me (until now) because his act. Imagine, he need
absolutely 2 attempts to score a goal from that penalty (even that become a
strong evidence about his class and skill) and that hysteria moved up getting
stronger.
From pathetic situation, 3-0 in the
first half, this miracle happened and bring back chances and glory. Also we
have to note Dudek impressive act to save Liverpool goal, and this match should
continue to the penalty shootout.
Shevenko shoot, then fail, make the
whole world stopped, and LFC fans jump up with massive hysteria. Even for me
that time, in the beginning I support Shevcenko but nope, Liverpool much more
deserve for Europe king of football. And the rest is sweet memories, Gerrard
lift up that cup, with a big smile in his face, and so on.
I don’t know but after that time, I
saw an enormous Liverpool FC logo in my uncle room. It is like 1.5x1 meters,
and he hang that up. And from that day, I care about football, and mostly, I started
to love Liverpool. That captaincy, that pace, that spirit, and mostly fans that
support with all of their heart, that never let their lads down, that was
awesome! Really! And I cannot forget that moment, even though I watch only a
replay match and from a far place from Istanbul.
Until now, when LFC getting bigger,
stronger, and far more strong. I cannot help but continue to love this team
more, of course from other side of world. Well, I do not have any attributes
that show this world I love Liverpool (money always become a reason, but wait
until I grab that chance, I will get one or two attributes) but my heart only
fly bird that literary stayed there. And so on, LFC still show me a wonderful
football, it fans still chilling my back, when you will never walk alone start
to take it place.
Saw more potential and of course
good player, Salah, Mane, Henderson, Mignolet, Phil, Firmoni, Woodburn,
Robertson, and lot more, really make believe with something. There is nothing
impossible, Liverpool still have a great chance to win something this year. But,
even if there is many obstacle, lot of challenge, I believe this team could
break all of them. And of course, until then, until that time, my heart still
belong to this team.
You Will Never Walk Alone
This is my 250th blog
